The aim of this ritual was to consecrate a Talisman created to help with my studies in school. However, while the need was definitely immediate, I also wanted to create a new template that could be applied to other workings. I had spent a good deal of time exploring various options to either find suitable material to draw from, or to create my own. This post will serve to give an introduction to my findings and the assembly of the ritual, which will be given in full afterwards.
Previously, I had twice successfully experimented with very slightly modified directions from Nick Farrell’s “Making Talismans”; that template of ritual basically being a formula of the Golden Dawn 0=0 Grade of Neophyte. The idea there is to initiate the talisman itself as if it were a candidate, imbuing it with a certain life force and direction of its own. Otherwise, without consecration rituals of some kind, talismans will amount to nothing more than decorated paper. Plus, ya know, ritual and chanting is fun, so there’s that. My only major additions to this template were some sections of ritual inspired by Alan Bennett’s ceremony taken from Pat Zalewski’s “Talismans and Evocations of the Golden Dawn”. A few of these inspirations found their way into our current ritual.
I have a strong interest in Psalm magic, mainly inspired from the grimoire tradition but also from Qabalistic works and Psalm correspondence lists found within Mouni Sadhu’s “Theurgy”, the second half of “the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses”, Godfrey Selig’s “Secrets of the Psalms”, Hoodoo sources, and those found in Tau Palamas’ Gnostic Voudon work “Syzygy”. There is a simplicity to the approach of using the Psalms in connection with magical ceremonies that I happen to love, however, I tried not to put too many into this one like I had added to the 0=0 template, and I ended up just sticking to using Psalm 150 at the tail end for thanksgiving, giving the rest of the middle sections enough room to breathe on their own without weighing down the ritual with too many insertions. An old mentor stressed this to me as a general rule to remember; “K.I.S.S.: Keep it simple, stupid!”
As an ex-initiate of the Golden Dawn, having left the group due to politics and an interest in other more mystical paths, I wanted a ritual that does not rely solely on the 0=0 formula. While I still believe these to be effective, decently impressive methods of talisman consecration, I was drawn to other sources; mainly those found within “Qabbalistic Magic”, written by Salomo Baal-Shem. There were some decent inspirations found within this book, and I recommend it for those studying practical Qabalah and ceremonial magic. I had been previously exploring the Sefer Yetzirah, and the connections found were quite serendipitous. Salomo had provided some interesting templates of preliminary rituals of sealing the sacred circle and for purification/banishing using a simple approach. Certain sections included were dangerously close to Golden Dawn techniques, like the reliance of the invocation of the 4 Archangels, the Qabalistic Cross, and the use of astral hexagrams in the cardinal quarters, yet there was still enough there to continue looking towards something that felt a bit more traditional and less modern. Then there was the Golem ritual.
In favor of not wasting the reader’s time, you can read about the Golem ritual HERE and also check out Salomo’s “Qabbalistic Magic” for his version. Be sure to read up on the 231 Gates of the Sefer Yetzirah as well, being the pairing of the letters of the Alef-Bet with each other. THIS is a good place to start, as I use this version of the Gates in my ritual:
After researching various sources, especially Aryeh Kaplan, and reading about how the 231 Gates was used to bring the Golem to life, I figured that I would develop a consecration ritual using the alef-bet permutations to create the astral body of a conscious thought-form that inhabits the talisman.
This is done by first setting up an arrangement of ten candles in the form of the Sephiroth of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. The talisman should be placed underneath the Malkuth candle. My ritual heavily relies upon the symbolism of the Flaming Sword/Lightning Flash. This implies the sequence of Divine creation through the Tree itself, through the 4 Worlds of ABYA, and down to the material realm, and it is this symbolism that we re-enact through the use of the Holy Names that empowers a firmly established thought-form in the astral; the “body” of which is made by drawing the Tetragrammaton above the talisman in the vertical formation that resembles the human form.
Instead of relying upon modern banishing rituals, I opted to rely solely on prayers for a more mystical meditative trance state that these can often bring. The key here is not to merely read the prayers, but to study them beforehand, understand their meanings, and upon using them in ritual, to let yourself become lost in the emotional reactions you feel towards the mental analysis you have already made. Let the prayers become a meditation, take your time, and let them move you instead of directing the ritual or worrying about the time at hand. This is also why I prefer the use of incense, because it represents our prayers rising to the heavens. I also love the subtle alchemical symbolism of the burning coal and melting resin changing forms and becoming the smoke that wafts into the ether.
In this case, I used Mastic, because it is a Mercurial incense, and Mercury is the chosen planetary influence here because my goal relates to mathematical knowledge, expansion of analytical understanding, and logical processes of mental capability. Mercury rules these all these things, and the language of numbers is something I have always struggled with. That half of my brain doesn’t work as well as the half that deals with art, music, etc.
The opening prayer I started with is titled by Salomo as “The Prayer For Him Who Wishes to Use the Great Name”, and it originates in the “Sefer ha-Yashar”. Since this ritual places extremely important emphasis on the Divine Names and their creative/transformative capabilities, I found this prayer extremely fitting. It is rather simple and direct, and prepares the magician for the use of the Tetragrammaton.
Just think about that for a moment, an entire prayer dedicated to describing the glory of God and acting as a preparation to use a name of God whose pronunciation is really lost in the sands of time. Heavy huh? This should cause us to pause for consideration at the immense importance of the symbolism of Divine Names, that even secondary symbols themselves are Holy by association to the Holiness of God to which it refers. Remember that modern Jews, out of respect for this same type of extended holiness, do not even include the letter O when they write “G-d”. Fittingly, I have immense respect for this prayer and what it forces us to contemplate, no matter how old it is or who wrote it, traditional or not. As the prayer itself is framed to include a petition at the end of it, this places it in the realm of the extremely practical as well as the mystical. This lets us know that the prayer is direct enough to be used by itself in its own right as a valuable practice.
The prayer itself includes only one use of YHVH, which is recommended by Salomo to be reverently vibrated during ritual and pronounced as “Adonai” during prayer or scripture readings. For us magicians, these prayers and magical invocations often overlap continuously, so I mostly vibrate the Name by spelling out its letters like most of us Golden Dawners were taught; “YOD HEH VAV HEH”. In the case of reading the Psalms in English, I simply read it as “The Lord” for simplicity’s sake.
The second prayer is a Hermetic Invocation found at the end of the second book of the Divine Pymander. I have yet to get this confirmed yet, but it seems like this is the prayer upon which the Golden Dawn’s “Adoration of the Lord of the Universe” is based upon, including at least one identical line and similar statements, yet longer and more detailed. Either way, I prefer the use of an older source and it is beautiful by itself.
I admit it, I am a sucker for long prayers and hefty invocations. The meditative trance they produce has a noticeably awesome effect upon my spirit. I only hope that those reading who are interested in trying these prayers themselves will treat them with the same respect and admiration, and even more so for the reading of scripture. I also place a very special importance upon prayer from the heart, because as beautiful as these writings are, nothing can compare to the connection made between you and the Creator by a genuine and heartfelt exposition of emotion on the spot. Remember this, no matter how many rituals you research or ceremonies you take part in. Balancing mysticism with magic is a difficult task for the world of modern magicians, but infinitely well worth the time.
Next comes the Sealing of Sacred Space, which comes directly from an imperative voice translation of the section of the Sefer Yetzirah that seals the cardinal directions, the above, and the below with six permutations of the Name Yod Heh Vav. Salomo recommends opening the quarters by drawing the Hexagram, yet I felt that this could become an experiment for a later operation, so I used a different technique. For example, the first line reads “I seal the Height with YOD HEH VAV”. At this point I drew the letters above me and visualized them shining and burning, protecting the Above. The rest followed similarly, and resembles the same technique used in the Golden Dawn when visualizing Divine Names on the astral.
I then sounded the battery; eight knocks (claps, foot stamps, whatever you use will work). Eight is the sacred number of Hod, and here we come upon the symbolism of Mercury again. The battery announces to all present that the assembly should prepare for a shift in both mundane attention and also in the special state of ritual consciousness that is created by the occult magnetism of ceremony, much like how we use the gavel knocks in the Masonic Lodge or the staff knocks in the Golden Dawn Temple. This effect is multiplied in group workings, as the more people are in attendance, the more people are able to both create, charge, and ‘plug into’ to feed from the egregore (For an excellent explanation of the occult mechanics of Lodge Magic, see John Michael Greer’s “Inside a Magical Lodge”).
The statement of intent is exactly what it sounds like, yet it is more than me saying that I am about to consecrate a talisman. In order to do this, a connection to the Divine must be established and worked with in order to assume the creative responsibility to work magic in the first place. The key phrase here is “to hereby act as Co-creator, Purifier, Consecrator, and Initiator of the mundane into the spiritual”. I do not see these things as a right of the human spirit like other magicians do, but rather as a privilege, a gift, and an ability granted from the Almighty. This may sound obnoxious to others, but this is my view, so deal with it.
The Exorcism of the talisman was inspired by those found in the Key of Solomon, of which I am quite fond of. Interestingly, out of the immense admiration of this writing/system that I have, I’ve chosen to not include any of its prayers. Not that I am opposed to their use, but for me, I would prefer a Solomonic working to be purely Solomonic and not mixed with any eclectic cherry-picking. However, this wording was recommended to me by a fellow magician as a general purpose exorcism for all talismans and I decided it was fit for the operation.
This exorcism is important to the sequence of operations here, as it cleanses the previous energies of the talisman from its previous state of impurity. Remember that even now it is not technically a Talisman yet, it is just a piece of photo paper, a “Creature of Earth”; much like a masonic initiate is referred to in the ritual as a “Candidate” and not a “Brother” until after the Obligation is taken (equate this to the Creature of Earth needing to be properly awakened and to receive its task before it is a “Talisman” proper).
Ah yes, the Planetary Invocation. Here is an edited version of the Invocation to Mercury taken from the Picatrix. At the end is a personalized petition. Pretty straightforward stuff. At this point I can explain the symbolism of the talisman itself. On the outskirts of the circle is the chosen Psalm, chapter 111:10. I chose this because of its obvious connotation of the fact that wisdom is first and foremost rooted in the connection to God. This resonated with me on a deep level after a lot of searching for a suitable Psalm. It is included in Hebrew at the top and English at the bottom. The Hierarchy of Hod is chosen, the Divine Name Elohim Tzavaoth, the Archangel Raphael, the Order of Angels Beni Ha-Elohim, the Intelligence of Mercury, Tiriel, and the Spirit, Taphthartharath. The color orange for Mercury/Hod was used, and also the octagon and octagram encloses all the names. In the center there is a Book and Torch, representing Study and Knowledge. Mercury’s sign crowns the torch, and the sigils of Tiriel and Taphthartharath are upon the leaves of the pages.
The Psalm is then repeated eight times while meditating upon the talisman, and then comes the purification. The sacred geometry of the cross and the invoking Fire and Water triangles are used, coupled with the fourfold name of YHVH and the threefold IAO. The circumambulation, of eight times, raises a cone of etheric energy and focuses it upon the central altar which is to be used in the next section of the creation of the astral form.
In this section, which I consider the real main part of the talisman ceremony, the magician creates a thought-form, in the shape of the vertical Tetragrammaton, which obviously resembles the human body. This is done by tracing the letters in the air above the talisman, which rests underneath the Malkuth candle. As the form is drawn, the visualization must be kept as best as possible.
The quotes here are from the Sefer Yetzirah, describing the Sephiroth. The magician lights the candles as each Divine Name is vibrated with the utmost veneration, for at this moment is the attempt to bring life into the thought-form, charging its aura, and then the symbolism is cemented by drawing the Lightning Flashing/Flaming Sword over the Tetragrammaton.
The permutations of the Alef-Bet are used in this fashion: “Alef Bet, Alef Gimel, Alef Dalet, Alef Heh…” etc. This is the simplified form of reciting the 231 Gates, and each letter is paired with the others until all are exhausted. The word Emet (truth) is written upon the “forehead” of the thought-form, just like the Golem, and the breath of life is breathed into the aura.
The conjuration of the Hierarchy simply calls upon the Hierarchy of Hod and Mercury and inscribes the sigils into the aura, like a key into a keyhole. The sigils used are mainly the ones created using the Golden Dawn Rose Cross sigil creator. However, I use Agrippa’s sigils for each Intelligence and Spirit. Then the charge is read, and the thought-form that now inhabits the talisman is named. In this case, the name was Tzelach, which means succeed or prosper.
As an added bit of magic, the intention is sigilized and then burned. The section read here is taken from the masonic Rite of Memphis. As a closing Prayer, the Hermetic “Secret Song, The Holy Speech” is read, in conjunction with another transitory battery and a license to depart. The Psalm 150 is read to conclude and thank the Almighty. Here is the ritual transcript for all who care.

Creature of Talismans, you are my living representative both on Earth and the hidden planes. You will work with me to help me become a productive student and to be successful in my studies and my exams. Be opened, O Earth, and let all the Treasure of the Rain be opened.
You Trees tremble not, for I will sing and praise the Lord of the Creation, and the All and the One.
Be opened you Heavens, ye Winds stand still, and let the Immortal Circle of God receive these words.
For I will sing, and praise him that created all things, that fixed the Earth, and hung up the Heavens, and commanded the sweet Water to come out of the Ocean; into all the World inhabited, and not inhabited, to the use and nourishment of all things, or men.
That commanded the fire to shine for very action, both to Gods and Men.
Let us altogether give him blessing, which rideth upon the Heavens, the Creator of all Nature.
This is he that is the Eye of the Mind, and Will accept the praise of my Powers.
O all ye Powers that are in me, praise the One and the All.
Sing together with my Will, all you Powers that are in me.
O Holy Knowledge, being enlightened by thee, I magnify the intelligible Light, and rejoice in the Joy of the Mind.

The powers that are in me cry these things, they praise the All, they fulfil thy Will; thy Will and Counsel is from thee unto thee.
O All, receive a reasonable Sacrifice from all things.
O Life, save all that is in us: O Light enlighten, O God the Spirit; for the Mind guideth or feedeth the Word ; O Spirit bearing Workman.
Thou art God, thy Man crieth these things unto thee through by the Fire, by the Air, by the Earth, by the Water, by the Spirit, by thy Creatures.
From eternity I have found means to bless and praise thee, and I have what I seek, for I rest in thy Will.
As the light hidden in darkness can become manifest therein, so shalt thou become manifest from concealment into operation. With this Talisman now duly purified, consecrated, and initiated with Force, Form, purpose, and direction, I declare these works now properly closed in the Ineffable Name of the Lord of the Universe.

To those called here before me, because thou hast diligently answered unto my requests, and hast been ready and willing to come at my call, I do here license thee to depart unto thy proper place; without causing harm or danger unto man or beast. Depart, then, I say, and be thou very ready to come at my call, being duly conjured by the sacred rites of magic. I charge thee to withdraw peaceably, and may the peace of God be ever continued between thee and I, Amen.
Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.
